What Is It?
The Easy-Bake Oven has been on the market since 1963. It was designed to teach Children to bake little items using a incandescent light bulb to heat up the oven. It included several mixes to bake treats.
What Happened?
In 2006 Hasbro decided to upgrade this famous toy by changing from a light bulb in the oven to an actual heating element. They also changed the design...so that children could get their little fingers stuck in the oven. There were 29 reports of children getting fingers caught in the oven or burned.
Aftermath?
May 2006 the CSPC announced the issue, and a retrofit pack was made available to fix the problem so that no fingers could get stuck in there. The problem? It didn't work, even with the retrofit fix, there were 77 additional reports of burns, and one 5 year old had to have her finger amputated due to the severity of the burns. This lead to a recall of this particular model of easy bake oven.
